東海大學通識教育

通識教育或指通才教育(General Education)或稱博雅教育(Liberal Education),在現今台灣各大學院校中,倍受重視;在美、日的主流大學中,則早已具有相當的份量。

本校創校時率先倡導通識教育,民國四十五年四月六日,本校第四次校務會議,曾約農校長即宣佈:「本校教育目標…其基本政策為通才教育,深願諸同仁能予研究與支持。」本校第六次校務會議(民國四十六年一月十一日),確立通識教育之理念,即「通才教育則以使學生對自然界、社會,以及人生,能作綜合性的了解,以促成其對整個文化的基本認識,和其全般人格的發展…專門與通才,互相補益。」隨即具文呈請教育部核准試行宏通教育(General Education)(教育部建議改稱通才教育),獲准自四十五學年度開始實施。

另外,在東海校歌中更明白宣示,「勞心與勞力,專業復宏通」,通識教育是為東海大學創校初期之重要教育特色。
